This August, Sapto Nugroho, a runner up in our 2017 ‘Experience Forests, Experience PEFC’ photo contest, shares the story behind his photo ‘Water Bombing’ and explains why forest fires are so dangerous for all of us.

Water Bombing

How do you feel about forests?

I am closely involved with the challenging task of putting out forest fires in Indonesia. Forest fires are often caused by illegal burning methods used to clear out vast areas of land for farming, or by extreme dry weather conditions. The smoke from fires fills the air and has a big impact on our quality of life.

The task has helped me to understand the importance of having healthy and protected forests for better air quality and a better environment.

How did the forest inspire you to take your winning photo?

I took this photo during a water-bombing mission to extinguish a forest fire. Looking at the vast forest from above the ground, it is such a mystery to seek what lies beneath the trees and plants. To see them burned to the ground with nothing left but dirt and black ashes changes your perspective from mystery into misery. The photo shows our effort to preserve our forests and our lives.

What you think of the work that PEFC does to care for forests?

PEFC’s work is very crucial to encourage forest owners, companies and other organizations to embrace and appreciate the forest more. It is now more important than ever for young generations to understand that they must treat forests with respect.

Having more certified forests will encourage others to help preserve and safeguard the environment. So having a healthy living forest has a significant impact on our lives.

About the contest

In 2017 we held the first ‘Experience Forests, Experience PEFC’ photo contest. Taking place in 23 countries, we received over 11,000 photos from forests around the world. From the thousands of photos received, we chose our top 12 images. For every month of 2018, we will be showcasing one of these photos.
