5 January 2021 Forests in photos

In 2020, we held our fourth ‘Experience Forests, Experience PEFC’ photo contest. Taking place in 12 countries, we received nearly 8000 fantastic forest photos from around the world.

Though it was not easy, we managed to choose our top 12 images, all of which can be seen here. For every month of 2021, we will be showcasing one of these photos.

Our photo for January is ‘Forest submerged in clouds’, taken by Martin Šebesta in Ježová, Slovakia. In our interview, Martin told us more about his photo and why we should take good care of our forests.

How do you feel about forests, both professionally and personally?

The forest is a perfect place to relax and unwind. Currently I am in a PhD degree programme. My branch of study is Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation, and I do research on wood-decay fungi. Therefore, I think forest protection is very important and our generation should pay more attention to this environmental problem.

How did the forest inspire you to take your winning photo?

The forest is a popular setting for photographs because it is considered as a place of tranquillity and stillness. Capturing pictures of forests with a camera is a unique challenge. Endless opportunities for forest photography abound. Mist is a very welcome addition to any landscape image. When it drifts over woodland, it can completely transform the environment.

What do you think about the work that an organization such as PEFC does to care for forests?

Nowadays it is very important to ensure that timber and non-timber forest products are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social and ethical standards. Sustainable forest management is very important for finding the balance for protecting our forests for future generations, while providing many other benefits, including the timber and timber products we use every day.
