17 December 2020 Forests in photos

This month, ‘Golden Forest’ is our photo in the spotlight. Frederic Vandenschrick, a runner-up in our 2019 ‘Experience Forests, Experience PEFC’ photo contest, tells us more about his magical image.

Throughout 2020, we have been discovering the top 12 photos from the 2019 photo contest, and have heard how they have come about from the photographers themselves. You can see all of them here.

Our photo contest was back in 2020, and also this year we received stunning forest photos from around the world! Stay tuned, as we will hear their background stories over 2021 – one story per month.

How do you feel about forests, both professionally and personally?

Forests are essential for me. I live close to the Sonian Forest, where I took my picture. The forest is 4000 hectares large and is close to Brussels, Belgium. Whenever I have an hour to spare, I go to the forest and enjoy the quietness, the wildlife and the trees.

How did the forest inspire you to take your winning photo?

I remember the moment I took my photo. It was on a Sunday morning in November, it was quite foggy and I was almost alone on that spot. Suddenly it all came together: the fog, the beautiful path and the sun rays cutting through the branches. A real gift from mother nature!

What do you think of the work that an organization such as PEFC does to care for forests?

Protecting the forests and finding durable solutions for wood production is essential for the future of our planet. This summer we've seen the Arctic ice and the Amazon disappear at a scary pace. We need to take action. Now.

About the contest

In our 2019 ‘Experience Forests, Experience PEFC’ photo contest, we invited photographers and forest lovers to show us their best forest photos.

The contest took place in 13 countries around the world, and we received photos of wonderful landscapes, wildlife and humans working and playing in the forest. From the thousands of photos we received, we chose our top 12 images – all of which can be seen here.
