This month Aleš Krivec, a runner up in our 2017 ‘Experience Forests, Experience PEFC’ photo contest, explains how a trip to the mountains to photograph daffodils led him to take the stunning ‘In the Fog’.
How do you feel about forests?
“The forest is where I go to relax. Just walking through them always makes me feel better. This is probably why we all like to visit mountains, forests and hills.
“Professionally, forests are a fantastic place to inspire photography as they are constantly changing and every new season brings a wealth of freshness. I particularly love the forest in autumn and winter (even though my image was taken in spring!).”
How did the forest inspire you to take your winning photo?
“My goal that day was to photograph daffodils on the local hills. In May, their slopes are full of beautiful white daffodils, covering the meadows in a white blanket.
“As it turned out, I was not lucky and did not find any, but as I started walking down, the fog suddenly rolled in. For a few minutes, it was very foggy; but as suddenly as it came, it started drifting away.
“Then, for a few seconds, this beautiful view opened up in the valley below. Spring larches started to glow in the morning light, and it was a very special sight. This image is still one of my personal favourites.”
What you think of the work that PEFC does to care for forests?
“I think that any organization that contributes to keeping nature ‘alive’ is very much needed. Now probably more than ever.
“In Slovenia, we currently have a big problem with the bark beetle devastating much of our forests. It is sad to see how whole regions are starting to turn gray. We all need to be more aware of how important forests are for our survival and general wellbeing.”
