Wooden triangles take on a new shape at Helsinki Design Week

Thousands of people gathered in Helsinki city center to see the PEFC Wood Works x Laser Cut Studio installation take shape over Helsinki Design Week.

Constructed from nearly 3,000 individual wooden triangles made of PEFC-certified Finnish birch, the centerpiece gradually came to life over the three day event, revealing its final shape on the last day.

Audience participation was a vital element of the event, with everyone invited to share their own forest-related stories and memories through Twitter, the PEFC Wood Works website or in person at the event. These messages were then laser engraved onto the wood triangles on the spot, before becoming part of the installation itself. As people sent in their messages, the centerpiece grew in size and the final shape became apparent.

“It was fantastic to see so many people visiting and getting involved with our event,” said Juha Uppa, Marketing Manager at PEFC Finland. “We must also thank Adam Rowe, the founder of Laser Cut Studio which designed and produced the installation, for working tirelessly over the three days to put the centerpiece together by hand.”

The end of the event however, did not signal the end for the wooden triangles, though the centerpiece itself had to be taken down. All the engraved individual wooden triangles were instead given away to visitors, enabling the concept to continue at home as the people used the wooden pieces to create different objects and share them in social media.

The PEFC Wood Works x Laser Cut Studio event was a collaboration between PEFC Finland, Helsinki-based Laser Cut Studio and Sugar Helsinki, with the aim of introducing the public to the journey sustainable wood takes from forest to the consumer and showcase innovative ways to work with Finnish birch.
