Timber has enormous potential to transform the built environment and is increasingly seen as the premier carbon-friendly construction material, far outstripping carbon-intensive materials such as concrete and steel. Globally, timber is being widely adopted by architects and structural engineers to deliver high-profile, award-winning projects and everyday designs – from houses, schools and hotels to restaurants, theatres, supermarkets, and swimming pools.

Mass timber products, such as cross laminated timber (CLT), glulam and laminated veneer lumber (LVL), have a key role to play in improving our built environment by creating healthier buildings that boost the circular economy, enable biophilic design and improve our health and wellbeing.

The prefabrication of structural elements also delivers faster and cleaner construction and provides opportunities for zero carbon developments. There is growing recognition that reducing embodied carbon is an important contributor to achieving net zero targets. Many of these products begin life in PEFC-certified forests.

PEFC-certified timber comes from a PEFC-certified forest – this is a forest managed sustainably in line with strict international requirements.

It means that forest owners manage their forest in a way that provides us with timber and other forest products and ensures that the forest will be around for generations to come. Using PEFC-certified timber shows a positive choice has been made to design and build with a future for healthy forests in mind.

One of our key campaigns is Designing the Future with Sustainable Timber, where we have brought together a range of stakeholders to promote the use of wood in construction in general and certified wood in particular.

The WTCE conference attracts between 800 and 1,200 participants and brings together researchers, engineers, architects, consultants, contractors, project managers, suppliers and manufacturers from across the globe, to discuss the role of timber as an essential material in delivering more sustainably designed buildings and a healthier environment, alongside wider topics of recycling, re-use and the benefits of wood products in a circular economy.
