From the slopes of Canavese in the Piedmont region to the forests of Gemona del Friuli, from West to East all the Alpine stages of the 97th Giro d’Italia climbed through PEFC-certified forests.
Travelling out to Italy for the final stages of the Tour, Bill Street, Chairman of the PEFC Board and avid cyclist enthusiast, was on hand to award Fabio Aru with the very first PEFC “Sport and Forest” prize, along with a pair of "Dolpi" sunglasses made of PEFC-certified larch wood and honey from the PEFC-certified forest of Rigoni di Asiago.
The young Sardinian, who went on to place third in the overall standings, was awarded the prize by a jury composed of world famous Italian cyclist Francesco Moser, alongside representatives from PEFC Italy and PEFC International.
Cycling, with forests so often the backdrop to many famous stages, is a natural partner for the promotion of sustainable forest management. As such, this year the race organizers chose PEFC Italy as a Green Partner, working together to show competitors, spectators and viewers why forests are so important.
“By promoting the sport of cycling, and family companies, the Giro is promoting a way of life, a life based on finding the balance among, social, environmental, and economic needs. These are the values that are shared by the millions of family foresters who created PEFC,” said Bill Street, during the closing stages of the Giro. “Together, both organizations, by promoting more sustainable lifestyles are making the world a better place.”
To complete their commitment to the promotion of forests, the race organizers used PEFC-certified paper for all the press releases and material distributed at every stage, equating to 820 kg of paper originating from sustainably managed forests.
