HABA: ethical and eco-fun with PEFC-certified toys

Perfect gifts for any time of the year, HABA create a range of beautiful, tactile wooden toys crafted from PEFC-certified beech. Both in the selection of materials and in the production processes, HABA is committed to using natural resources and has been making PEFC-certified wooden toys since 2010.

Founded in 1938 as a 'factory for fine wooden toys', nearly 500 new products are developed every year with the HABA family of companies now in its third generation. The HABA brand is sold worldwide in 50 different countries and the company philosophy is based on one simple principle: children are what matters the most in life.

Wooden toys are an indispensable part of the HABA product range today. They use PEFC-certified beech from sustainably-managed forests in Germany within a 150 km radius of its factory. The product packaging features the PEFC label on many of HABA’s toys. HABA’s corporate sustainability policy also communicates the company’s commitment to responsibly-sourced wood to customers.

Proactive environmental protection and sustainable production are fundamental elements of its company philosophy. As early as 1999, HABA was the first German toy manufacturer to comply with EMAS, receiving ISO 14001 certification for environmental management.

“It is important to us to pursue sustainable environmental protection at all stages of our work and we have set ourselves the goal of becoming even better," say HABA.

"If we do not manufacture a product ourselves, then it comes from long-standing partners who we trust and who we know also work according to stringent environmental standards. When shipping our products, we use the most environmentally-friendly and recyclable packaging material possible – and only as much as we really need.”

Sustainability is a central element of the corporate philosophy. Recycling of waste wood, the use of rainwater for sanitation facilities, office air-conditioning through ground/air heat exchangers, electricity generation via photovoltaic systems, natural open spaces and facades and green roofs, are among the measures used to protect and reduce the impact on the environment.

For HABA complying with all applicable environmental laws and standards is not an obligation but ‘second nature’.
