95% of all the timber reported by the UK Contractors Group (UKCG) last year was certified to a certification system approved by the UK Government Central Point of Expertise on Timber (CPET) such as PEFC, according to their recently released 2013 Reporting Summary.
This impressive figure is the result of a decision taken in 2012 to purchase all timber and timber products, either for temporary or permanent use, certified as legally and sustainably sourced, as defined by CPET.
In addition, CPET, which offers support to public sector bodies and their suppliers who need to comply with UK government rules on the sustainable sourcing of timber, currently approves two certification schemes as providing evidence of legal and sustainable sourcing – PEFC and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council).
As an umbrella organization, PEFC recognizes over 35 national systems, including the North American Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and the Malaysian Timber Council System (MTCS) scheme. As a result, these are all acceptable for UKCG use.
UKCG is the primary association for contractors and their supply chain partners operating in the UK. Together, UKCG members account for a third of construction output in the UK, providing strength to leverage knowledge, experience and relationships.
