PEFC Sponsors Brazil’s Wood Construction Global Meeting

21 February 2025 Sustainable construction

PEFC is a lead sponsor and key supporter of the Wood Construction Global Meeting being held in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 12-14 March 2025.

The conference is organised by Núcleo da Madeira (Wood Technology Reference Hub), a non-profit organisation dedicated to the sustainable development of the timber supply chain.

The event has been arranged in advance of COP30 which will take place in November 2025 in Belém, Brazil.

Commenting on PEFC’s decision to sponsor this international gathering of timber and construction professionals, Fabienne Sinclair, Head of Market Engagement at PEFC commented: “In our mission to support healthy and productive forests, we work tirelessly to promote responsible sourcing through PEFC certification. This provides assurances to construction professionals that sustainably sourced wood and wood products will continue to be available for future generations.”

With the construction sector responsible for over 40% of global CO2 emissions, the conference aims to connect Brazilian and international wood industries with globally recognised experts, showcasing innovative and sustainable solutions.

Over three days, global experts in architecture, forestry, and sustainability from Europe, Asia and North and South America, will discuss the role of wood in construction and the complex technological and market challenges that Brazil faces within an international context. It will also explore how tropical timber producing countries like Brazil can take a lead in the global market.

Adriana Nozela, Executive Director for PEFC Brazil, will be speaking on 13 March with a session titled: ‘The Importance of Wood Origin: Certification as a Tool’.

“Potential consumers of wood in construction, such as specifiers or builders, are concerned about the legality and sustainability of production sources. However, many are unaware of how certification systems work,” Adriana commented.

“Our goal is to present to this audience how certification ensures legality and sustainability, providing them with confidence. Raising awareness among consumers and policy makers about the importance of certification is essential for promoting wood as a sustainable construction material. “

At the conclusion of the conference, a report will be created with suggested ‘global guidelines’ for the responsible use of wood in construction.

This report will be and will be presented at COP30 later in the year.
