4 June 2025 Event report

PEFC International engaged, together with other key EU forest stakeholders, at the high-level forest policy conference organised by the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

PEFC EU Policy Officer Isaac Lievevrouw is welcomed at the conference by the local mascot

Discussions covered a variety of EU priority topics such as the proposed Forest Monitoring Law, the new Bioeconomy Strategy, nature conservation and the growing societal expectations on forests.

Different panel discussions, presentations and a field visit allowed for interesting insights and constructive conversations.

It was clear that all parties present have a common goal: sustainable, resilient forests, supported by scientific developments, that can deliver multiple services not only now, but also in the far future while keeping in mind the likely increase in pressure by climate change and societal needs.

PEFC appreciates to be included in this conversation and to exchange on our experiences from over 25 years of developing a shared understanding of sustainable forest management and promoting it through voluntary certification.

Our constant strive for dialogue and reflection with key stakeholders ensures that the systems and solutions we offer can continue to deliver on the promises of sustainable forest management.

With Poland concluding its six-month presidency, Denmark is next in line (starting from 1 July) to coordinate and lead the Council meetings in line with the Presidency's agenda and focus areas.

We hope the EU Council priorities will extend these discussions on how forests can continue to meet the diverse needs of society.

We thank the organisers of the conference for inviting PEFC and congratulate them on the engaging and well-hosted event.
