The last Photo of the Month for this year takes us to Belgium, where Isabelle Modave captured a Kingfisher in an atypical place. The photo ‘On Standby’ was a winner in PEFC Belgium’s 2022 photo contest, and among the top 12 photos in the International contest.

In our interview, Isabelle told us more about her photo and what she loves about the forest.

How do you feel about forests, both professionally and personally?

In the forest I feel calm, I like to smell the trees and nature, there are always beautiful discoveries and encounters to make.

How did the forest inspire you to take your winning photo?

During a walk in the forest, I saw this Kingfisher at the edge of a river. I wanted to take a picture of it because it was in an original and atypical frame. It was sitting on a branch in a tree whereas normally it is rather sits at the edge of the water. I found it really beautiful.

What do you think about the work that an organization such as PEFC does to care for forests?

I think that PEFC takes care of our forests and contributes to their future by protecting them, by organising events around forest themes and by helping the population to be more attentive to biodiversity.
