We are looking for an EU Policy and Communications Officer to join our PEFC EU Office in Brussels, working with our EU Representative.

Position: EU Policy and Communications Officer

Location: Brussels, Belgium (European Forestry House)

Occupation time: 100%

Duration: 3-year contract, with the option of extension

Unit/Department: EU

Line Manager: EU Representative

Travel: occasional 

Start: as soon as possible (ideally by May/June) 


We are expanding the activities of our PEFC EU office, and we seek a new colleague to support this work. The selected candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks in relation to EU policy and communication, including:

  • watching over selected EU policy areas
  • developing the PEFC EU communication approach
  • monitoring EU funding opportunities
  • helping to coordinate outreach activities at EU level

The selected candidate will work directly with the PEFC Secretariat and our international members as well as support the implementation of the PEFC Alliance Strategy 2030.


Policy (approx. 50%)

  • Monitor and analyse EU policy files related to forests, nature, climate, bioeconomy, sustainable finance, and others, and prepare related information and material.
  • Disseminate timely information to the PEFC members.
  • Develop the PEFC messaging and contribute to PEFC EU advocacy, including development of PEFC positioning.
  • Support the work of the PEFC EU working group.
  • Collect and disseminate PEFC good practices linked to relevant EU areas.
  • Participate in meetings and events in or outside Brussels.
  • Drive the overview of relevant EU funding mechanisms and opportunities, as well as support PEFC’s participation in EU-related projects.

Communication (approx. 30%)

  • Develop the PEFC EU communication approach, including on the EU election period.
  • Set up and drive relevant PEFC EU channels of communication, e.g. newsletters, social media channels, etc.
  • Develop PEFC communication material, e.g. brochures, presentations, fact sheets, etc., and activities, such as events, webinars, PEFC Brussels week, etc. in cooperation with PEFC International Communication experts.

 Outreach (approx. 20%)

  • Outreach: liaise with members, stakeholders, partners, national experts, scientific and academic experts, media experts.
  • Contribute to the PEFC EU Engagement strategy.


  • University degree in international or political science, natural resources management, forestry, or related fields.
  • Fluency in English and at least one other EU language, preferably German, is required.
  • Proven knowledge of, and familiarity with, the functioning of the EU and the EU institutions.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in EU work environment (PA, policy, communication).
  • Forest knowledge and appropriate (technical) knowledge in the area of sustainability is desired.
  • Experience in EU (or other) funding programmes, and in international cooperation, is desired.
  • Excellent communication (written, oral), and proven capacity to structure the gathered information.
  • Service-oriented to the team and membership.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, positive and good work ethics, and friendly spirit.
  • Interest in and personal commitment to sustainability.
