Ickburgh Special Educational Needs School

Ickburgh SEN SchoolThis groundbreaking specialist school for 150 pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) was designed by Avanti Architects and built by main contractor McLaren Construction and was delivered through Hackney Schools for the Future Limited (HSFL).

The building consists of a three-storey CLT superstructure made from PEFC-certified Austrian spruce and pine sourced and manufactured by Stora Enso Building and Living.

Building with CLT enabled the build time to be significantly reduced. This meant that the project was delivered 20% faster and provided a 2% cost saving against the overall project value.

The structural spanning characteristics of CLT lent itself to the very cellular layout of a special educational needs (SEN) school.
