PEFC Spain awarded the “PEFC Sustainability Award” last Sunday at the Circular Sustainable Fashion Week in Madrid, highlighting the winners’ commitment to circularity, traceability, and sustainability in their designs. The award went to Andrea Piñeiro, Agustina and Kumi Sneakers.

The Circular Sustainable Fashion Week Madrid is an inclusive, diverse event for sustainable circular fashion, created to raise awareness for more ethical, conscious, and responsible fashion, actively involving the fashion industry.

At this year’s event, and as part of our "Fashions Change, Forests Stay" campaign, PEFC Spain underlined the link between fashion and forests by sponsoring the "PEFC Sustainability Awards" for the most sustainable collection.

The PEFC Sustainability Awards

Of the 24 collections submitted, the three that best represented sustainability and circularity were chosen as the winners.

The assessed criteria were the origin of the materials and fabrics used, the use of textile certifications, the proximity to the place of manufacture and confection, the circularity or upcycling techniques applied to the designs, and the functionality, timelessness, and inclusivity of the collection.

Each of the three winners received nine metres of PEFC-certified fabric, made of man-made cellulosic fibres (MMCF) from PEFC-certified forests.

Textile producer Textil Santanderina supplied the fabrics from remnants of its production, thus reinforcing the message of traceability and circularity in fashion.

The winners will use the fabrics received to create three new styles each, which will be presented in photographs and physically in a joint exhibition to encourage other designers and fashion industry professionals to use virgin and recycled forest fibres in their creations.

Fashions Change, Forests Stay

Under the theme "Fashions Change, Forests Stay", we promote the use of fabrics from well-managed forests, and raise awareness in the textile and footwear industry of the positive impact of using these fabrics and the importance of PEFC certification to ensure traceability and a sustainable origin.

Forest-based fabrics such as tencel, modal, viscose or derivatives come from wood pulp.

PEFC certification ensures that this wood is sourced from forests that are managed under strict environmental, social, and economic criteria to enhance their protective and productive functions and to ensure that they will be around for generations to come.
